Handmade Couture: Make this look - A Slouchy Leather Hobo Bag.

Are you or someone you love a designer handbag enthusiast? Do you sometimes find yourself staring at bags you see in magazines, or even on someone's shoulder in the grocery store wondering how to recreate that bag? Then the Handmade Couture series is for you. We pick a designer bag and tell you how to recreate it using available sewing patterns, materials and hardware.  You can have the same look, but make it totally "you" and for a fraction of the cost. When you sew your own bag you know exactly what is going into the bag and can add or modify features to suit your preferences. Today, we are going to show you how to recreate this Shinola relaxed leather hobo.

The Shinola relaxed leather bag is a gorgeous casual bag that is made with finely grained leather in a gorgeous bourbon color, and offers a chic elegance that will remain in style for years to come. The Shinola measures 14" W x  14" H x 6" D. The exterior has a bottom accent band and a clean lines throughhout. The interior features a zip pocket, and slip pockets to keep everything within easy reach. You can own this beauty for 895 USD.

Like the look of the Shinola?  Lets be our own brand.

Pattern + Hardware + Fabric= Handmade Couture

Pattern:

The Swoon Bonnie is the perfect doppleganger to our inspiration bag. Like the Shinola, Bonnie is a slouchy style hobo bag with an oval bottom and tons of space to hold your necessities. Bonnie's pattern lends well to color blocking, but to recreate the look of our inspiration bag, simply cut your exterior panels as once piece instead of two and omit the exterior pocket.

Bonnie measures 14" W x 12" H x 6" D which is very similarly sized to our inspiration bag.

Hardware:

To achieve the look of the Shinola, swap out the O-rings for rectangular rings.

You can also pick up a set of rivets or chicago screws to secure your strap like the Shinola.

Fabric:

If you wanted to recreate our inspiration bag, you can find a similar leather like this whiskey pull up from the Tannery NYC.

If leather isn't something that you aren't comfortable using, you can find a fauc leather that would work well for the same look of our inspiration bag, like this monk's robe faux leather from Sew Sweetness.

Another great option is natural cork fabric, which is available from MM Cork Supply in Canada or from Sew Sweetness in the US.  You can get cork in a various colors and finishes, like this chocolate cork:

You can choose to do this in whatever fabric you are comfortable working with! A fun cotton print, canvas or even denim!  That's the benefit of creating your own, it's what YOU want it to be. Handmade can be couture too!

  2. I love your style right down to your delivery style! I was wondering if you or any Canadian shop was thinking about doing the acrylic templates for bag patterns? Seems to be a hot market in Australia.
